I am Ricky Berger. I founded Berkent over 25 years ago. Becoming an attorney was my second career. Before that (since the age of 13) I was a professional guitarist. I was voted best jazz guitarist in Massachusetts (All-State) and attended Berklee College of Music. I left Berklee to tour and be signed by a major label; but alas I was not signed. Through all of that experience I knew NOTHING of the music business and that held me back.
When you don’t know the rules of the game you cannot successfully play the game.
At the “behest” of one of my parents (who shall remain nameless), I went back to school and received by B.A. in Philosophy and then my Juris Doctorate as well. I have now practiced law for over 30 years and throughout that time I have always practiced entertainment law, representing artists, producers, managers, agents, labels, recording studios, equipment manufacturers and tech companies servicing some aspect of the entertainment industry. In addition, I have continued as a professional musician, manager, producer and music business entrepreneur. I have also been and continue to serve as a professor in the Music Department at University of Massachusetts Lowell for 10 years teaching publishing and copyright and music business entrepreneurship in the department’s music business degree concentration.
